Obituary of Marion T. Amell

Please share a memory of Marion to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Schenectady – Marion Theresa Amell-taken from us too quickly after fighting a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Marion was born in Queens, NY in 1932, the daughter of Anthony and Josephine Kownacki (Budway.) Marion was raised in Schenectady. In her youth, she worked at the Darling Shop with her mother, followed by the Telephone Company, where she met the sister of the man she would marry, Bernard Amell (deceased in 2013.)

Her 61 year marriage to Bernie produced 10 children; Theresa Feathers (Charles), Victoria Barber, Angela Stewart (Charles), Anthony Amell, Bernard Amell (Victoria), Lorraine Littauer (Robert), Joyce Amell (William Kotas), Kenneth Amell (Kathy), Christine Amell and Francine Schoonmaker (Mark).

During her child raising years, Marion was a Cub Scout den mother, an extraordinary self-taught cake decorator and an avid rose gardener at her house of 55 years, on Parkwood Blvd. As her children grew, she delivered Ad Express papers with them, volunteered for the American Cancer Society, worked for RGIS Inventory Company and in 1985, she took a job at the NYS Department of Tax and Finance, to retire 10 years later from what was then known as the Tax Compliance Division. Marion was a devout Catholic and attended St. Mary's Church on Eastern Avenue until its closing and then became a parishioner and communicant of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Schenectady. She spent many years enjoying bus trips and cruises with her husband and regularly traveled to Florida with her family to visit her mother and sister. She loved the theatre and was an avid reader. She also enjoyed entertaining in and decorating her house, which she was able to stay in, up until last year, with the help of her family. She finished out her days with the caring staff of the Eddy Village Green of Cohoes. Marion was loved and respected by all who knew her. She leaves behind her 10 children, as well as multiple grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and is also survived by her sister, Lois Kownacki. She will be sorely missed.
