Dorothy R. Hicks passed away Tuesday, October 1, 2019, on her 94th birthday at the Wilkinson Residential Facility in Amsterdam with her family at her side. Dorothy, the daughter of James and Mary Masilonis Dirse and later the step daughter of Genevieve Stakauskas Dirse, was born in Amsterdam on October 1, 1925. She was a 1944 graduate of Wilbur Lynch High School and resided in Amsterdam until her marriage to John F. Hicks on October 11, 1947. For the remainder of her life she resided in Scotia and Schenectady. Dorothy first worked at GE as a lab technician for 10 years. After staying home with her son James, she worked as a tax technician for the New York State Department of Tax and Finance for 30 years until her retirement in 1996. Dorothy was a First Degree Knight of Lithuania, Council 136. "Dottie" was a founding member of the Nocturne Home Bureau since 1955 and maintained lasting friendships with the members. She also belonged to golf and bowling leagues. She was an active and longtime communicant of Our Lady Queen of Peace Church where she was a member of the Rosary Society and also served as lector and Eucharistic minister in church and in hospitals. Dorothy's husband John predeceased her on October 20, 1984. She was also predeceased by her son James on August 20, 1992. Dorothy is survived by several cousins. She is affectionately called "Aunt Dorothy" by her cousins Julie de Boer, Paula Dirsa, Mary Jane Morse and Kristen Olechowski. Her dear friends Edward Sargalis, Jan Swiergiel, Linda Martinez and Debbie Fish also survive. Funeral services will be Friday morning, October 4, 2019, at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. by Rev. Vincent Ciotoli. Prior to the Mass a calling hour will be held from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at the church. The interment is in Park Cemetery in Scotia. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, 210 Princetown Rd., Schenectady, NY 12306. The family wishes to thank you to the Community Hospice and to the staff at Wilkinson Residential Facility for their compassionate care. Arrangements are by the Daly Funeral Home, Inc. 242 McClellan St., Schenectady.
