Dorothy Butch Obituary

Dorothy Butch- Albany

Dorothy M. Butch died July 22,2025 at the Loudonville Assisted Living Residence in Albany, New York.

Dorothy was born December 20, 1925 to Carl Butch and Mary (Pitts) Butch of then rural Colonie. When the Great Depression left the nation jobless, it was Dot’s father’s love of farm life and vegetable gardening that enabled him to provide for his family. Dot’s love for animals also began in the 1820’s farmstead where the animal collection included goats, a cow, turkeys, chickens, pigeons, geese, and of course dogs, cats and a parrot!

Dot attended the University of Rochester and graduated from the New York State College for Teachers. She began her 30 year career as a Librarian at the New York State Library, broken by only two years as an Army Librarian in Germany and a brief interval at SUNY Albany.

Dot loved travel, reading, gardening, the Red Sox, skiing, golf, family togetherness, and her many post-retirement nature – loving years in Saratoga County’s peaceful settlement called Ballston Center.

Throughout her lifetime, she found joy in the unending companionship of dogs of all varieties, and wild birds flocked to her feeding stations. Her Ballston farm fish pond gave her much pleasure watching the playful antics of her charismatic grass carp and observing pond visitors such as green and Great Blue herons. Her regret in late years was that her abundant milkweed waited in vain for the butterflies whose decline resulted in no visitors.

Dot was predeceased by her sister Ruth(George) Treis, her brothers Edward(Patricia), Carl(Margaret), William, nephews Peter Treis and Thomas Butch. She is survived by her nieces Sally(Tom) Legendre, Beverly (Jerry) McGee, Marcia(Robert) Setaro, Cynthia Bentley, and nephew Paul(Serena) Butch, and their families, and cousins especially her dear and steadfast Quirk family(Gary and Anna Mary).
