Donald W. Bonk Obituary

Donald William Bonk, a lifelong resident of Schenectady County, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at Kingsway Arms Nursing Home in Schenectady. He was 92 years old.

Born in Schenectady, Don was the son of Alice (Connelly) and Garrett Bonk and was the beloved twin brother of the late Ronald Bonk. He grew up in Schenectady and graduated from Linton High School. Though his roots were in the city, Don proudly made his home in Rotterdam for most of his life, always embracing his community and taking pride in his ZIP code—12306.

As a young man, Don worked for Connelly Brothers Dairy, his mother's family-owned business. He later spent the majority of his career with the Town of Rotterdam, where he was a dedicated and respected public servant. After retiring from the town, he continued to serve his community as a court attendant for the Schenectady County Court System, and Department of Motor Vehicles. He also was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.

Don was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and brother. A faithful Catholic and proud Democrat, he lived a life grounded in service, family, and tradition. He had a deep love of history, especially Civil War history - and was an enthusiastic John Wayne fan. Don enjoyed bowling for many years and earned the distinction of being the Village at Kingsway Arms Wii Bowling Champion.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Patricia (Kochem) Bonk; his cherished daughter, Sharon Bonk (Michael Bender); and his adored granddaughter, Sarah Sheehan. He is also survived by his sister, Karen Buehler; sister-in-law Noreen Bonk, and his dear in-laws, Penny Every, Richard Kochem, Gary (Rosemary) Kochem, Karen (Dean) Morris and Bill (Farlene) Kochem, many nieces, nephews, and extended family who brought joy to his life. In addition to his twin Ronald, Don was predeceased by his older brother Gary Bonk and his sister Kathleen "Katje" Bonk Renner.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 31, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan Street, Schenectady. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, August 1, at 9:00 AM at St. Luke's Catholic Church, State Street, Schenectady. Interment will follow at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna.
