John R. Nyhoff, 80, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at St. Peter's Hospital, under the loving care of hospice.
Born in Troy, New York, on June 28, 1945, John was the son of the late John Nyhoff Sr. and Florence Cavanaugh. He dedicated his career to public service, working for the New York State Attorney General's Office as a Prosecution Specialist in the Oil Spill Unit, from which he later retired.
John is survived by his devoted wife of 40 years, Mary Ellen Nyhoff, and his stepsons, Steve (Sue) Hartz and Matt (Elisa) Hartz and brother Phillip Nyhoff. He will be remembered as a kind and honorable man — the love of Mary Ellen's life — whose quiet strength and good heart touched everyone who knew him.
Throughout many years of health challenges, John faced each day with remarkable courage and grace. He once reassured Mary Ellen that he had lived a good life. His perseverance and spirit can best be reflected in the words of Dylan Thomas: "Do not go gentle into that good night, rage, rage against the dying of the light."
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan Street, Schenectady, New York. Calling hours will precede the service from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Park View Cemetery, Schenectady.
