Philip A. Fraterrigo M.D. Obituary

Albany- Philip Anthony Fraterrigo MD, age 85 passed away unexpectedly on January 25, 2026.


Philip was born and raised in Buffalo, NY, attended Canisius College, earned his medical degree from Marquette University Medical School, served two years in the Navy and completed his Ophthalmology Residency at Albany Medical College.


Philip devoted his professional life to the practice of ophthalmology, serving the Schenectady community with great joy for 52 years. During his distinguished career, he served for many years as Chief of Ophthalmology at St. Clare’s Hospital and was a lifetime member of the Schenectady Medical Society. Patients often remember him not simply as their doctor, but as a friend who welcomed long conversations.


Philip was predeceased by his parents Louis and Rita Fraterrigo. He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Barbara Fraterrigo and their children, Philip (Peg), Michael (Karla), David (Raechel) Fraterrigo; Lynn (Jim) Boler; and Kerri (Rob) St Amand, sixteen grandchildren, sister, Cathy Szell and many loved nieces and nephews.


Philip will be remembered for his easygoing and friendly manner, deep faith, and unwavering devotion to his family. When his children were growing up, he was an active presence in their lives serving as a youth basketball and Little League coach. Young at heart and possessing an infectious laugh, he cherished time being surrounded by family. He loved the outdoors and time at Sacandaga Lake and the Cayman Islands where he was usually surrounded not only by his immediate family but with his grandchildren, nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.


He leaves behind a legacy of faith, kindness and devotion to family that will be carried on by all who loved him.


Calling hours will be held on Friday, February 6, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at Daly Funeral Home in Schenectady. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 7, at 10:00 AM at St. John the Evangelist Church in Schenectady.
