Mary Theresa (Costello) Hall, 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on August 4, 1935, in Schenectady, New York, Mary was the daughter of Thomas Costello and Margaret (Hannon) Costello. She spent her life devoted to her family, friends, community, and faith. In her later years, she resided at Heritage Home for Women in Schenectady, where she was cared for with kindness and compassion.
Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband, Earl Hall, who passed away on August 17, 1997, and by her brother, Thomas Costello.
She is survived by her children, Daniel Hall, Thomas Hall and his wife Ann Hall, Margaret Hall, Cora Hall, Nancy Hall, and Kenneth Hall. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Kevin Docyk, Nicholas Docyk, Deana Lenz and her husband Joseph Lenz, Corey Hall and his wife Jessica Hall, Angela Hall, Jessica Hall, Becca (Hall) Perkins and her husband Nicholas Perkins, and Steven DeCarlo; and by her great-grandchildren, Corey Hall Jr., Nathaniel Hall, Armando Goodell, Victoria Dumond-Hall, Kendall Hall, Christopher Morris, and Selyna Dumond-Halse.
Mary is also survived by her sister, Eileen (Costello) Spadaro, and Eileen's children, Benjamin Spadaro and Tracy Spadaro. In addition, she is survived by the family of her late brother, Thomas Costello, including his former wife, Patricia (Harrigan) Costello Parrissi, and their children, Kevin Costello, Kathy (Costello) Smith and her daughter Laurel Smith, and Noreen (Costello) West.
Mary was a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy in Schenectady. She enjoyed a long and successful career at Campbell Plastics on Campbell Avenue in Schenectady, where she worked for more than twenty years from the 1970s through 1995. Beginning as a laborer, she served in multiple capacities, including union roles, before advancing to Manager of Production. She was respected and well-loved by her coworkers and remained proud of the relationships she built throughout her career.
Following her time at Campbell Plastics, Mary worked at Van Corlaer Elementary School and the Schenectady Charter School. Beyond her employment, she generously volunteered her time to support school events, field trips, parties, and activities, always putting the needs of children and families first.
Mary had a lifelong passion for dancing. As a young woman, she attended Orlando's Dance School in Schenectady with her sister Eileen, where she learned by watching and later took tap dance lessons. She continued her dance education at Lorraine-Michael's Dance School, studying ballroom dancing. Throughout her life, she remained active in the dance community, often helping her sister organize and host weekly ballroom dances.
Family was always at the center of Mary's life. She loved camping in the Adirondacks and transformed every campsite into a welcoming outdoor home. She and Earl enjoyed fishing trips
throughout the region, and she was famous for saying, "You tell me where, and I'll bring the picnic." Whether at a campground, family gathering, or holiday celebration, Mary had a special gift for creating warmth, beauty, and lasting memories. She delighted in decorating, setting beautiful tables, and making every occasion feel special. Her greatest joy came from being surrounded by those she loved.
Mary also enjoyed photography and was active in functions and events for TOPS, lunches at the Hibernian Senior Center, and Elvis tribute dances and performances. A faithful member of Immaculate Conception Church in Schenectady, she served as a communicant and remained devoted to her faith throughout her life.
Mary's, cherished friend, and beloved companion, Linda Davies not only gave warmth and kindness but also everything Mary did for fun was made all the more special by the presence of her lifelong friend. Linda played a significant role in Mary's life, always ready to lend a hand and offer support when needed—so much so that Mary often referred to her as her angel. Their bond was a testament to the power of friendship, love, and unwavering care.
Known for her generosity and compassion, Mary quietly helped many people in need. During the Christmas season, she often participated in family adoptions—both formal and informal. If she learned of a friend, neighbor, or coworker facing difficult circumstances, she would purchase gifts, wrap them, and arrange for them to be anonymously delivered, never seeking recognition for her kindness.
Mary also served as a Den Mother for the Boy Scouts of America for many years while raising her sons. She loved working with the boys and creating memorable experiences for them. Family members fondly recall stories of her racing the Scouts and often outrunning all but the one fastest among them. I wish now I could remember his name.
Mary will be remembered for her loving heart, boundless energy, generosity, devotion to family, and the joy she brought to everyone she met. Her kindness touched countless lives, and her memory will be treasured forever by all who knew and loved her.
