Michael John DeMasi, born September 29, 1950, passed away peacefully at his residence on Friday, June 12, 2026.

Michael was the son of the late Frank A. DeMasi and Mildred Moore DeMasi. He attended special education classes at Lincoln School before moving to the Rome State School in Rome, New York, in the early 1970s when O.D. Heck facilities were operating. He later transitioned through various community-based programs and adult group homes, where he resided until his passing.

Michael was a truly special person. Although he had limited intellectual abilities, he was always on the move. He loved swings, slides, walking, and playing with his siblings. Michael enjoyed visits to parks, bowling, and was known to climb surprisingly tall trees. Family members often asked, "Where is Michael?" as he occasionally wandered off quietly on an adventure known only to him, while his mother frantically searched for him.

Michael had a special fondness for vacuum cleaners. More than once, he awakened his parents in the middle of the night after completely assembling the old Electrolux vacuum and deciding that 2:00 a.m. was the perfect time to clean the living room.

He loved listening to The Beatles and The Monkees, watching The Three Stooges, and spending time with cats and babies. Michael was a blessed addition to both his family and the many group homes that became part of his extended family throughout his life. He enjoyed attending ARC day habilitation programs and especially loved coffee, root beer, and good food. Michael looked forward to baseball games, apple orchard trips, and the many recreational activities provided through his programs. He treasured home visits with his parents and outings with his siblings throughout his adult life.

Michael was a special child and a special adult. His family wishes to thank the many specialists, teachers, doctors, nurses, social workers, aides, and caregivers who helped him live a full life surrounded by dignity, kindness, and love. Special thanks are extended to the neighborhood children of Edward Street and Albany Street for understanding and accepting Michael despite his limitations.

The family also wishes to thank Karen Hines, whose loving care and inclusion made Michael feel like part of her family for many years before his needs increased. Heartfelt gratitude is also extended to the staff of Robin House, where Michael resided until his homecoming to Jesus. He especially loved Reba Backus Thomas, spending time on the deck, and watching wildlife from his swing seat.

Michael was predeceased by his parents, Frank A. and Mildred Moore DeMasi; his stepmother, Anne DeMasi; and his brothers, Frank DeMasi and Stephen "Stevie" DeMasi.

He is survived by his sister, Jackie (Michael) Allard; his nephews, Paul (Pearl) Allard and Brian (Darci) Allard; his grandnephew, Xavier; his grandniece, Zoelle; and many cousins, friends, caregivers, and acquaintances who helped make his life full and happy.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial visitation on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan Street, Schenectady. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
