Helena (Penny) M. Every Obituary
Helena (Penny) M. Every passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 14, 2026.
Born in Schenectady, New York, Helena was the daughter of the late William and Julia Kochem and remained a lifelong resident of the Capital Region. She earned her nursing degree from the Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing in Troy and faithfully served the Schenectady community as a registered nurse at St. Clare's Hospital for more than 50 years.
Nursing was not simply Helena's profession—it was her calling. She was a caregiver at heart, known for her compassion, kindness, and unwavering dedication to her patients. Helena often stayed beyond her shift to sit with terminally ill patients who had no family by their side because she firmly believed that no one should have to die alone. Her gentle presence brought comfort to countless individuals and families throughout her remarkable career.
Outside of her work, Helena found joy in simple pleasures. She loved crafting, especially crocheting and embroidery, and enjoyed relaxing with a cup of coffee, a puzzle, or a word-search book, which was almost always tucked away in the purse her family affectionately referred to as her "Mary Poppins purse." She was a longtime member of the Rotterdam Senior Association, where she formed many cherished friendships and enjoyed traveling with the group. Helena was also an avid New York Yankees fan, adored teddy bears, and spent many happy hours tending her garden while watching cardinals and butterflies visit.
Helena is survived by her loving children, Jacqueline M. Every and David F. Every; her siblings, Patricia A. Bonk (the late Donald), Richard H. Kochem, Gary J. Kochem (Rosemary), William E. Kochem Jr. (Farlene), and Karen L. Morris (Dean); her grandchildren, Kyla (William) Sorel; her great grandchildren, William Sorel IV and Seamus; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her former husband, Richard F. Every; her sister-in law, Joan M. Weaver (Wes); and her longtime companion, Earl "Tom" Thompson.
Relatives and friends are invited to call on Thursday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan Street, Schenectady. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 9:00 a.m. at St. Luke's Catholic Church, Schenectady. Interment will follow in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna.
Helena's family would like her to be remembered for the compassion she shared so freely with others, the comfort she brought to those in need, and the love she had for her family, friends, and community.
