Ethel Jane Osterhout Obituary
Ethel "Jane" Osterhout passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, New York.
Born in Troy, New York, Jane was the daughter of the late Edward and Ethel Thomas. She was a graduate of South Colonie High School and later earned an associate degree in Culinary Arts from Schenectady County Community College.
Jane will be remembered as a devoted and hardworking mother who always put her family first. Throughout her life, she held many positions, each reflecting her strong work ethic and determination. Among her favorite years were those spent working at Heritage House for Women, where she found great fulfillment serving others.
A dedicated volunteer, Jane gave countless hours of service to the Schenectady Business and Professional Women organization. A longtime member, she faithfully served as both president and parliamentarian, forming lasting friendships while working to support women in the community. Her family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the many friends, caregivers, and volunteers who provided her with kindness, support, and companionship in her later years.
Jane is survived by her husband, Richard Osterhout, children, First Sergeant Kevin (Joy) Lyons, U.S. Army (Retired); Kimberly (Eric) Rogers; Eugene Lyons; and Sean (Devin) Lyons; siblings, Patricia Warncke, Edward Thomas, Jr., Richard Thomas and Elaine Carpenter. She is also survived by her stepchildren, Richard Charlton, Michael Charlton, Cheryl Dayter, Tracy La Freniere, Mary Beth Osterhout, and James Osterhout; her siblings, Patricia Warncke, Edward Thomas Jr., Richard Thomas, and Elaine Carpenter; as well as several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many dear friends.
In addition to her parents, Jane was predeceased by her son, Christopher Scott Lyons and by her sisters, Margaret Cook and Mary Alice St. Germain.
Family and friends are invited to call on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan Street, Schenectady, New York.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Schenectady. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, Jane's family requests Memorial contributions to be made in her name, to Schenectady Business and Professional Women, 2215 Nott St., Schenectady NY 12309.
