Obituary of George Mastro

Please share a memory of George to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
George Mastro, 92, died Sunday, May 30, 2010, in Kingsway Arms Nursing Center after a brief illness. George is predeceased by his parents, Dan and Isabella; his dearest wife of 37 years, Evelyn; as well as his brothers, Albert and Arthur. He leaves behind a son, Christopher Mastro and his wife, Linda of Guilderland; as well as a sister, Lena; several nieces and numerous cousins. In addition, he leaves behind his cherished and longtime companion, Elizabeth Fluty. Early on, George worked as a salesman both at Gold's Boot Shop as well as Central Plumbing and Heating in Schenectady. His working career ended as the manager of Shoporama Wine and Liquor store in Rotterdam. George valiantly served as a medic in the Pacific theater during WWII, after receiving his medical training at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. He was awarded the Bronze Star and other numerous commendations by the Army for assisting in a multitude of surgical operations on his wounded and fallen brothers under heavy enemy fire during this horrific campaign. Staff Sergeant Mastro's legacy is that of a proud, distinguished veteran who fought to preserve our country's freedom, always displaying the flag and wearing the attire of our armed services to this day. His kindness, sacrifice for others and infectious sense of humor will sadly be missed by all, especially his friends, and fellow residents at the Kingsway Manor Assisted Living facility where George resided for the past four years. His family extends their kindness and gratitude to the staff and residents at Kingsway Manor for making George feel welcome there and also to the kind, caring, patient and sensitive staff at Kingsway Arms Nursing Center in his final days, especially nurses Joan and Barbara, who clearly went the extra mile in his treatment. Funeral service will be held Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. from the Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan Street, Schenectady, then to St. Paul the Apostle Church, Albany Street and Kings Road, at 11 a.m., where a Mass will be celebrated. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to call at the funeral home Thursday morning after 9 a.m. Interment with military honors will be held in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Kings Road, Schenectady. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.
