Obituary of Georgiana Latimer

Schenectady - Georgiana Latimer, 95, passed away at home on January 31, 2017. She was born November 2, 1921 to Fred and Rose Mahler Elber in Erie, PA. Georgiana grew up in Erie, PA. She married Jack Latimer June 21, 1945. They loved to dance to big band music. Jack and Georgiana moved to Schenectady when Jack was transferred by GE. They raised their four children there. During this time, Georgiana was an active volunteer for over 50 years at St. Luke's Church and School and the Dominican Retreat House. She also was a member of the Rosary Society at St. Luke's. She loved to sing and belonged to the Thursday Musical Club and Mello Dears. Georgiana was a member of the Mohawk Valley Hiking Club for many years. When her knees gave out, she took up biking, which she was passionate about, riding 15 miles a day 3-4 days whenever the weather permitted. She was predeceased by her husband, John J. Latimer, in 1974; sisters, Roselouise Kulich, Frances Demuling, Elizabeth Noyes and brother, Frederick Elber. Survived by sons, John (Pat) Latimer Jr. of Mishawaka, IN, Joseph (Joyce) Latimer of Manhattan, KS; and daughters, Mary Beth Backowski of Schenectady, NY and Kathleen (Robert) DeCataldo of Niskayuna, NY; grandchildren, Benham Latimer, Katie Werda, John Latimer III, Jeffrey Latimer, Sara Backowski, Devon DeCataldo and Audra DeCataldo; three great-grandsons, many nieces and nephews, and dear friend and hiking and biking partner, Adrienne Karis. Funeral services will be held at 8:15 a.m. Saturday February 4, 2017 at Daly's Funeral Home, 242 McClellan St., Schenectady, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9 a.m. at St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church at 1241 State St., Schenectady, with Fr. Dominic Isopo celebrating. The Rosary Society will gather at 8:45 a.m. to serve as honorary pall bearers. Interment, Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, February 3, 2017 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. St. Luke's Rosary Society will gather at 4:30 p.m. to pray the rosary. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Georgiana's name to St. Luke's Church Restoration Fund, 1241 State St., Schenectady, NY 12304 or the Dominican Retreat and Conference Center, 1945 Union St., Niskayuna, NY 12309.
