Obituary of Allen Woerner

Please share a memory of Allen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Allen Woerner passed away at home on October 10th due to complications from his long struggle with neurofibromatosis 2. Despite many physical challenges over the years, he was not beaten, but triumphed throughout his life traveling around the world with his wife of 43 years, Maureen, and his son, Dan, who were at his side for his final days. His unique sense of humor will be missed along with his intellect and dynamic verbal ability. Al retired from the NYS Department of Education where he was a rehabilitation counselor for VESID (Vocational and Education Services for Individuals with Disabilities) and an accomplished singer/songwriter of the Sleaze Brothers. He has been able to touch a great many people in his lifetime as a source of inspiration and subject of admiration. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all those who knew him and his effect on the world therefore is surely substantial. Allen was born on August 14, 1947 in Huntington, Long Island to Jesse Mabel Woerner and Ludwig Lenhart Woerner. He received two master's degrees from SUNY Albany. He was predeceased by his daughter, Jessica and he leaves behind his wife, Maureen and son, Daniel (Kathryn Burnet) of Brooklyn. He also leaves his sister, Carole Messersmith of Maryland, and her daughters, Whitney (Brian) Messersmith-Foskey and Krista (Adam) Messersmith-Levenson, along with their children. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 9:30 at Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan Street, Schenectady. Calling hours are Friday evening 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at St. John's Cemetery, Brandywine Ave., Schenectady. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice Of Schenectady, Grand Boulevard Fire Department (Niskayuna) or the Brain Science Foundation (brainsciencefoundation.org).
