Schenectady - Philomena Olechnowicz, formerly of Plymouth Ave., Schenectady, passed away at the Teresian House on Saturday, November 2, 2013. She was born on September 12, 1918, daughter of Stanley Gwiazdowski and Sophie Rykowski Gwiazdowski. Philomena was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, Schenectady. She was active in many parish activities including Rosary Society and PTA. For many years, Philomena, along with her husband, Vince, owned and operated Oley's Tavern and later, Oley's Liquor Store on Eastern Ave. in Schenectady. She touched many lives as she shared her passion for music. Early on, she played for dancing schools and church functions. After the death of her husband, Philomena played piano at several area nursing homes bringing smiles and memories to the residents, especially when she played her old-time Honkey-Tonk tunes. At Proctor's Theater she brought the keyboard to life for the old time movie goers. Family was the core of Philomena's life. She is survived by her sister, Joan Sbrolla of Absecon, NJ; her daughter, Susan Olechnowicz of Colonie, NY; and her son and daughter-in-law, Vince and Nancy Olechnowicz of Delhi, NY. In addition, she is survived by two grandchildren, Richard Olechnowicz of Blasdell, NY and Jenna Chaojareon of Leesburg, VA; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In 1984, Philomena was predeceased by her loving husband of 45 years, Vincent H. Olechnowicz. She was also predeceased by her sisters, Theodora Przastek, Jessie Wendoloski, Eugenia and Jenny Gwiazdowski; and her brothers, Henry and Casimir Gwiazdowski. Funeral service Wednesday morning 8:15 from the Daly Funeral Home Inc., 242 McClellan St., Schenectady and 9 a.m. at St. Anthony's Church (Seward Pl.) where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Calling hours Tuesday evening 5 to 7 at the funeral home. Interment Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna. Contributions in Philomena's memory can be made to the Teresian House, 200 Washington Ave. Ext., Albany, NY 12203.
