Obituary of Robert McElroy

Schenectady - Robert S. McElroy, 85 years old of Schenectady, passed away on August 9, 2014 at Ellis Hospital. Born in Schenectady on March 30th, 1929, Bob was the son of Margaret Queeny and Sylvester W. McElroy. He was the loving husband of Florence Andrews McElroy, who died on May 19, 1989. He was predeceased by his brother, Donald S. McElroy. Bob was a graduate of Nott Terrace High School, Fordham College and Fordham Law School. During the Korean conflict, he served in the U.S. Army. In 1990, Bob retired from the New York Telephone company where he held various positions in sales and marketing for 25 years. Aside from his intelligence and quick wit, Bob will be remembered for all the laughter and good times he provided to so many as a valued and loyal friend. Over the last few years, Bob was able to indulge his passion for travel, visiting such exciting locales as India, Portugal and even Antartica, often on extended walking tours. He had a particular love of Key West and France. Bob was truly one of a kind and tales of evenings spent in his good company are the stuff of legends. However, whether at home or an ocean away, at days' end, Bob would relax with a favorite martini, a good cigar and fine conversation. The start of every day would always find Bob locatiing a church and attending Mass. Bob is survived by his loving daughter, Lucinda, who lives in Manhattan with her husband, John Hahn; and by his cousin, Edward McElroy. Funeral service Monday, 10:30 a.m. from Daly Funeral Home, Inc., 242 McClellan St., Schenectady and 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church (State St. and Lafayette St.), where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated.
