Schenectady - Richard Matthew "Dick" Thornton, of Schenectady, NY, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 28, 2015, at Ellis Hospice. Dick was born on September 3, 1943 in Schenectady, son of Gordon and Marguerite Thornton. He is survived by his wife, Rose; children, Wendi (Brad) Thornton, Shawna (Alex) Thornton and Daniel Thornton; two grandsons, Raymond and Jonathon; three great-granddaughters; two brothers, John (Nancy) Thornton of Urbandale, Iowa and James (Teri) Thornton of Cincinnati, Ohio, and their families. He is preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Brittani. A graduate of Linton High School, Dick attended SUNY at Cobleskill before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force. He served in Vietnam and Thailand, earning the Vietnam service medal and national defense service medal. His kind, gentle manner and concern for others led to his career in health care at Baptist Nursing and Rehab Center. Dick enjoyed preparing family dinners and visiting Cooperstown and Cape Cod with his family. A visitation and celebration of Dick's life will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 8, at Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan Street, Schenectady. A military graveside service will immediately follow at Vale Cemetery.
