Roland Phillip Carlson, 92, of Niskayuna, NY, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 10, 2010, surrounded by his loving family. Roland was born in Moline, Illinois, and moved to Schenectady in 1952. He was employed by General Electric for 38 years until his retirement in 1980 as general manager of the Automated Equipment Operation. Over his career, Roland was instrumental in the development of various machinery which produced GE products for the electrical industry. Roland enjoyed camping, golfing, playing bridge, but most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. Roland was a very active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Schenectady, a member of the Rotterdam Elks Lodge, and the GE Elfun Society. Roland was the son of Lillian and John Carlson; and was predeceased by his brothers, Carl and Harry Carlson. He is survived by his wife, Margie, of 69 years; his daughter, Linnea Potter of Schenectady; his sons, Phillip Carlson (Karen) of Niskayuna, John Carlson (Sharon) of Glenville and Eric Carlson (Donna) of Saratoga Springs. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Cheryl Osborne (Tom), Jennifer and Katie Potter, Brian Carlson (Mandie), Lori Carlson (fiance, Telly Jones), Sean, Michael, Lindsey, Christopher and Alyssa Carlson; great-grandchildren, LinneaJo and Tori Cross, Benjamin Harris, Tyler and Hailey Carlson, Alex and Camilla Cross. Roland is also survived by his brother, Clarence Carlson; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 14, 2010, at the Grace Lutheran Church, 1930 Hillside Avenue, Schenectady, NY, at 11 a.m. Calling hours will be on Thursday evening, May 13, 2010, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan Street, Schenectady, NY. Burial to follow immediately at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Roland's name to Grace Lutheran Church, 1930 Hillside Avenue, Schenectady, NY.
