Obituary of Marguerite Porter

Schenectady - Marguerite (Joos) Porter, 93, passed away peacefully at Ellis Hospital on April 23, 2016, after a long illness. Marguerite was born on November 24, 1922 in Schenectady, NY. She was a 1941 graduate of Draper High School. Upon graduation from high school, she went to work for the General Electric, where she worked for a couple of years. In 1942, she married, Edward S. Porter. During the 1950's, Marguerite was a member of the Schenectady Melo-Dears. Marguerite was a life member of the Vischer Ferry Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary, and was an election inspector for over 40 years. During the late 1960's and early 1970's, Marguerite was a 4-H leader for the "Busy Bakers" in Rexford. Marguerite enjoyed gardening, traveling, reading and spending time with her family. She especially looked forward to the yearly vacations to Wells Beach, Maine and the holidays spent with her family. Marguerite was an avid New York Yankees fan and never missed a day of "The Young and the Restless." She was a parishioner of St. Kateri parish in Niskayuna. Marguerite is survived by her best friend and sister, Susan (Joos) MacNeil; and brother-in-law, William Plaus. She was the loving mother of Michael Porter and his girlfriend, Cathy Harrington, Kevin (Cathy) Porter and Sharon (David) Winters. She was the beloved grandmother of Sean Porter, Daniel Porter, David Porter and Christopher Porter. Marguerite is also survived by her great-granddaughter and the joy of her life, Angel Porter. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her her parents, Margaret (Moolick) Joos and William Joos; a brother, William Joos; and her sister, Marion (Joos) Plaus. Marguerite was also predeceased by her loving husband of 59 years, Edward S. Porter. Contributions can be made to the St. Kateri Tekawitha Church in Schenectady or The Vischer Ferry Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary in Rexford. Funeral service, Wednesday, 9 a.m., from Daly Funeral Home, Inc., 242 McClellan St, Schenectady and 9:30 a.m. at St Kateri Tekakwitha Church (Rosa Rd). An hour of visitation will be held Wednesday morning at the funeral home from 8 to 9 a.m. Interment, St John's Cemetery.
