Schenectady - Patrick Coleman Callan, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2016 at Ellis Hospital, in Schenectady, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Mitchell, South Dakota, on April 17, 1933, to Thomas and Georgia Callan, he spent his youth on the family's farm. Patrick was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War, and after serving his term, attended the South Dakota School Mines and Technology, where he received both undergraduate and master's degrees in electrical engineering. Patrick married, Beverly Barrett, in 1956, and moved to Schenectady, NY in 1960, at which time he started his career at the General Electric Company, in the Research and Development Center. During his career at GE, he authored several patents and developed control systems for large steam turbines used in power plants around the world. Patrick was the president of the local Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (I.E.E.E.) and received an award for his contributions to this organization in 1978. He also spent time teaching engineering classes at Union College. Patrick concluded his successful career when he retired in 1996. Patrick was an active member of the Catholic Church, as well as a selfless volunteer in the community. Both Patrick and his wife, Beverly, opened their home to Scottish exchange students over many years, who became a special part of their family. Patrick's children and their spouses are Catherine Ann Callan and James J. Napolitano (Philadelphia, PA), Steven Patrick Callan and Karen Callan (Saratoga Springs, NY), Thomas Edward Callan and Rachel Cianci-Callan (Rosendale,NY), Colleen Marie Callan and James Marx (Schenectady, NY), Joseph Barrett Callan and Vicki Chen-Callan (Schenectady, NY), Patricia Mae Caron and Michael Caron (South Hadley, MA), Margaret Mary (Megan)and Anthony Anni (York, ME), John Peter Callan (Schenectady, NY). Patrick's grandchildren are Annie, Julia, Jason, Joey, Robert, Ryan, Meghan, Stephan, Sean, Nicholas, Makena, Daniel and Erika. Patrick also has many nieces and nephews. Patrick's family would like to thank the nursing staff at Ellis Hospital and Dr. George Giokas of Community Hospice for their loving care and support. The family will receive visitors on Thursday, May 19th from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Daly Funeral Home, Inc., 242 McClellan St., Schenectady, NY 12304. Funeral service for Patrick will be on Friday, May 20th at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church on Union St., Schenectady. Patrick will be laid to rest in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Schenectady.
