Alplaus - Gloria Jeanne Francis Story, died Friday, May 20, 2016 at Kingsway Arms Nursing Center. Born, June 24, 1925, in St. Joseph, Missouri, she is a graduate of Lafayette High School, Class of 1943. After school she worked as a secretary and enjoyed going out with friends. One night they went to the local roller skating rink, where she saw a young service man named, Roger Story, and asked him skate. That led to a very short courtship (seven days before he was shipped out), a marriage on August 23, 1945 and 61 happy years of marriage, until his passing in 2006. When WWII ended, they moved to Dutchmen's Village, on the Union College campus, while Roger attended school. After college, it was time to start a family, so they moved to the Village of Alplaus, where Jeanne would be involved in just about everything over the years. Over the course of eight years, they had three children, Ray, Charlie and Ellen. Never one sit around when the kids went to school, Jeanne got a job with, Dr. Stanley Garrison, at the Burnt Hills Vet, a job she loved and stayed at for 15 years. Then in 1974, her social activism changed everything. The US Postal Service announced they would be closing the Alplaus Post Office. This led to a Village wide uprising, where Jeanne was right in front. They fought long and hard, and eventually won the right to have a contract post office. Jeanne signed on and would work for 14 years, of which she was very proud. While working in the Post Office, Jeanne realized that when the fire siren rang, there were very few men home during the day to respond. That led to her to become the first female firefighter in Alplaus. A partial list of activities she enjoyed over the years includes Secretary and Treasure for the Glen Hills Swim Club, Past President Ladies Auxiliary of the Alplaus Fire Dept., volunteered to drive the Senior Van in Glenville, Editor of the Glenville Seniors Newsletter. Jeanne was a card shark, playing bridge and pinochle, a witty conversationalist, and an all around upbeat and happy person. The family would like to thank everyone who works in the Kingsway Community, especially the loving people at the Manor, where Jeanne spent eight years. We would like to thank Dr. Busino's staff, for all their help over the years. There will be no funeral service. Donations in Jeanne's memory may be made to the Alplaus Fire Dept., 309 Alplaus Ave., Alplaus, NY 12008 or the Alplaus United Methodist Church, 3 Brookside Ave., Alplaus, NY 12008.
