Obituary of Thomas O' Brien

Thomas Michael "OB" O'Brien, Jr. passed away Sunday, May 22, 2016, surrounded by his loving family, after a brief illness. OB was born in Schenectady the son of the late Thomas and Veronica (Lighthall) O'Brien, Sr. He worked as a machinist at General Electric for over 30 years. OB was a lifelong fire buff and a volunteer firefighter for more than 13 years with the Stanford Heights Fire Department. He played basketball and baseball all through high school and college, excelling at each, setting records and receiving many accolades. His athleticism led him to be an avid sports fan, especially loving the NY Yankees, NY Giants and NY Knicks. OB was also a high school and college baseball umpire for more than 30 years, as well as a basketball referee. He loved vacationing with his family in Wildwood, NJ and their frequent trips to the Big Apple, where the family enjoyed many Yankees and Knicks games. OB is survived by his beloved wife, Carol (Gormley) O'Brien; their sons, Mike and Tim; his daughter-in-law, Lisa and his cherished grandchildren, Jacob and Lily. He is also survived by his aunt Inga; sisters-in-law, Elly Dymond, Dianne Peters, Lori Juliano, and Roberta Canavan; brothers-in-law, Joe Juliano and Ed Canavan; as well as nieces and nephews, Casey, Scott, Josh, Amy, Bobby (Mandy), Frankie (Lisa), Joey (Tracy) and Chris. He was predeceased by his brothers-in-law, Paul Mack and Frank Dymond. Calling hours will be Thursday, 4 to 7 p.m. at Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan St., Schenectady. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, 11 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, Schenectady. Entombment will be in Most Holy Redeemer Mausoleum, Niskayuna.
