Obituary of Frieda Legorius

Please share a memory of Frieda to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Niskayun - Frieda Legorius, 81, of Niskayuna, went to Heaven on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 in her sleep at home surrounded by her stuffed animals. Frieda was the beloved daughter of the late Nicholas and Bessie (Vomvila) Legorius, both of Greece and Niskayuna; sister of Katherine Fifield of Thonotosassa, Florida, Joan Contompasis of Schenectady and Jerry Legorius of Glenville; sister of the late Madeline Hourigan, Amelia Legorius, George Legorius and Demetra Legorius; sister-in-law of Rosemary Legorius of Colonie and the late James Hourigan, Chester Fifield, Harry Contompasis and Rose Legorius. Frieda is also survived by her much loved nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her blue parakeet, Sweetie. Frieda attended Elmer Avenue School, Van Antwerp School and graduated from Nott Terrace High School in Schenectady. Throughout her life, she was a charitable and deeply religious person. She volunteered at the hospital, taught Sunday school at Saint George Greek Orthodox Church and participated in the church's annual Grecian festival. She was a member of the church's Ladies Philoptochos Society. For years, Frieda sold Avon products and remained a loyal Avon customer to the end. She loved animals, the environment and politics and frequently donated to these causes. In her younger years, Frieda enjoyed walking around her lifelong Upper Union Street neighborhood where she frequently patronized the local businesses. She looked forward to Niska-Day every year. Frieda enjoyed collecting a variety of items such as inexpensive pens, colored markers, buttons, lapel pins, flags, stickers, stuffed toys and religious artifacts and all of these things had a special place in her house. She also enjoyed watching television, especially Andy Griffith Show reruns. She stayed connected to people, always remembering to send cards and letters, and she loved, loved, loved to talk on the telephone. Frieda was especially proud of her Saint Paul medal that was presented to her by the Archbishop of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese for her service to the church. She was also proud of a 2013 Daily Gazette article about her success managing diabetes. She passionately loved her family, her church and "all things Greek." Frieda was kind-hearted, generous and honest. Her child-like innocence, combined with her strong-will and dogged determination, made her unforgettable. She was loved and will be missed, but her spirit will live on. Frieda's family wish to extend sincere gratitude to all of her health care providers throughout the years and to her home health aides, especially Marlene, Tammy and Delory, who lovingly cared for Frieda, helping to make her life happy and comfortable. Thanks to the priests and parishioners of Saint George Greek Orthodox Church and to all of Frieda's friends and neighbors for their patience, understanding and kindness. Thanks also to Home Style Pizza and Meals on Wheels for keeping Frieda well-nourished. A very special thank you to Paul L. Ryan, Esq., Frieda's lawyer and friend, whose unwavering devotion to helping Frieda throughout the years is truly appreciated. The funeral service will be Monday 12 noon at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 107 Clinton St., Schenectady, calling hours will precede the service from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan St., Schenectady with the Trisagion service at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
