Schenectady - Carl John Marczewski, age 87, passed away early in the morning on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2016. Born in Schenectady, NY on November 4, 1928, he was the son of Walter and Mary Slepowronski Marczewski. Though childhood illness prevented his graduation from high school, he put much effort into self-education and ultimately achieved a Bachelor's Degree from Siena College in 1955 and a Master of Social Work Degree from Fordham University in 1963. Carl placed high value on education and continued to be an avid reader of non-fiction throughout his life. His particular interests included philosophy, the functioning of the human brain, and the psychological elements of interpersonal relationships. He thoroughly enjoyed a lively debate on almost any subject. He also enjoyed several hobbies, including woodworking and golf, until disability in his later years interfered with both. Carl worked as a Social Worker throughout the Capital District over the years. He was employed by a variety of agencies including the NYS Dept of Social Services, the Albany Co Mental Health Clinic, St. Anne's Institute, and the Schenectady County Alcoholism Council, where he was Executive Director in the agency's early formative years. He retired from full-time work at the Family Counseling Program of Catholic Charities of Schenectady in 1993, having served as its program director for several years; after retirement he continued there as a part-time therapist until his 80th birthday. Carl touched many lives during his career, and every one was special to him. He went out of his way to see the good in every person he encountered. Carl married Margaret Van Wormer in 1954 and they had four children. They separated in 1978 and ultimately divorced. She predeceased him in 2009. In addition to his parents and his former wife, he was predeceased by his son, Christopher, and two siblings, Irene Peterson and Walter Marczewski. Mr. Marczewski is survived by his current wife of 34 years, Angela (Maiuri) Marczewski, three daughters: Mary Marczewski of Delmar, Catherine (David) Berschwinger of Voorheesville, and Lorraine (Michael) Bennett of Glenville, a sister Marie Richey of Ft. Pierce, FL, grandchildren Brielle Snow, Jessica and Joseph Berschwinger, Tara Butler, Jennifer DaSilva, and Megan Marczewski.
