Obituary of Matilda Welcome

Gllenville - Matilda Welcome peacefully departed this world with her loving son at her side on February 3, 2017. Matilda was born in Pineville, SC, the daughter of Thomas and Polly Wright. She spent many years in Savannah, GA. In 1941, she married Louis Welcome, Sr. and they were blessed with a son, Lewis, Jr. Matilda and her family moved to New York State in 1947. The family lived in Hudson prior to relocating to Schenectady. Shortly after arriving in Schenectady, Matilda and her husband joined Duryee Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. She and her husband were married 66 years until her husband's death in 2008. She was a member of the church for 65 years. Matilda had a passion for taking care of God's people. She loved cooking and was a culinary chef for the Schenectady Savings Bank for the officers and staff, for 15 years, as well as becoming the head of the Culinary Ministry of the church, where she presided over the going home celebrations, conferences and banquets The church truly loved Mrs. Welcome, as a testament of their love on January 24, 2017 the church named the kitchen the: Mrs. Matilda Welcome Kitchen. She had a warm and caring spirit who was a living example of Roman 12:13 "Distributing to the saints, given to hospitality." Throughout her life, she discreetly shared her blessings with those in need. In 2009, she became the Queen of the Duryee Church family, to this day she continues to be the Queen. Matilda was the matriarch and oldest living member of her family, where she was held in high regard and is fondly called Aunt Tee, by her family and community. She has left an imprint on her family and the church that never be forgotten. She is survived by her son, Lewis Welcome, Jr; daughter, Priscilla Welcome; her sister, Leola Spencer; three grandchildren, Wanda, Michelle and Lewnisha; two great-grandchildren, Aset and Shani; two God daughters, Anna Fulton Miles and Nicole Tanner; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. Funeral service, Saturday, 12 noon at the Duryee A.M.E. Church, 311 Hulett St., Schenectady. Calling hours, Saturday morning, 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the church. Interment Parkview Cemetery, Schenectady. Memorial contributions may be made to the church. Arrangements are by Daly Funeral Home, Inc., 242 McClellan St., Schenectady.
