Richard Marcellus Clowe
August 2, 1931-September 24, 2017

Schenectady- Richard Marcellus Clowe; Also known as Dick, passed away at his home at Kingsway Village with his loving wife and daughters at his side.

He was born in Schenectady, the son of Kenneth Charles Clowe and Ella Mae Bradley. After graduating from Mont Pleasant High and Syracuse University, he served in the Korean War for 2 years with the 32nd Signal Depot and 17th Infantry regiment, 24th Infantry Division.

Dick spent a total of 37 years at GE, retiring in 1992. He started in the Engineering Lab, then transferred to the Accounting and Operations Division.   Towards the end of his career, he worked on the OHIO class submarines, American's deterrent to nuclear war.

Anyone who knew Dick, knows skiing was his passion.  He lived a full 70 years on the slopes giving it his all.  He held many positions in the local areas to promote his love of this sport.  He supported SWC (Schenectady Winter Sports Club) for 10 years, where he held the positions of President and Treasurer.  He then became Director of the Capital District Ski Council, where he held the position of President.  His next steps were Director of United States Eastern Amateur Ski Assoc., where he held the positions of Treasurer (2 yr.), Vice-president (2 yr.) and President (2 yr.).  His final two years he served on the Board of Directors of the United States Ski Association.  He then returned to somewhat calming waters as Director of Hickory Hill; Caretaker of Poma II; Treasurer for 12 yrs.; and then was President for two consecutive 2-year terms.

He also had the honor of working at the starting gate as the communicator for the 1980 Olympics’ for the Women’s Downhill, Slalom and Giant Slalom.  After retiring from GE, he taught for 17 years with the Adaptive Program at Windham Mt., where he specialized in the Bi-Ski and Mono-Ski.  He also volunteered on weekends for 6 winters at Double H HoleIn The Woods.
Another of Dick’s passions was working diligently on the family’s farm in Pattersonville. He was a gentleman farmer for over 30 years. He enjoyed his gardens, fields and expansive woods.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marian Joan  (Sadowski) Clowe, two daughters; Martha Ann Van Vleet (Kirby) and Elizabeth Ellen Reddick (John Turco) and one son, William Bradley Clowe, five grandchildren and close friends Christine & Donald Hyde and Nathan Pyne & Ann Pacelli.

Calling hours will be held at the Daly Funeral Home at 242 McClellan St. Schenectady on Friday, September 29, from 4-6PM.

Church services will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 10 a.m. at Christ Church of the Hills, 4809 Mariaville Rd., Schenectady with interment to follow at West Glenville Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dick’s memory to Christ Church of the Hills, 4809 Mariaville Rd., Schenectady, NY 12306 or The Double “H” Hole in the Woods Ranch, 97 Hidden Valley Rd., Lake Luzerne, NY 12846.
