Margaret Mary Mearns Allen, 89, of Lishakill Rd., died Sunday, September 12, 2010, at home, after a short illness. Margaret Mary was born in Schenectady, the daughter of Peter and Rose Schaefer. She was a graduate of Draper High School, and St. Peter's Hospital School of Nursing in 1943. She served in the U.S. Army Nurses Corp in World War II. Mrs. Allen had lived in Hawthorne, NJ, for 40 years returning to the Schenectady area in 1990. She was a member of St. Peter's Hospital Nurses Alumni, and had been a communicant of St. Paul the Apostle and St. Madeleine Sophie Church. Mrs. Allen was predeceased by her husbands, Dr. James Bryce Mearns; he died in 1981, and Milton Allen, he died in 2008. She is survived by four children, James (Barbara) Mearns of Ogdensburg, NJ, Mary Anne (John) Schmid of Humble, TX, Patricia (Lawrence) Fusco of Ridgefield Park, NJ, and Thomas (Sonia) Mearns of Colonie; stepson, Steven Allen of Salem, OR; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers and sister, Vincent, Paul, and Carl Schaefer, and Gertrude Fogarty. Funeral service Thursday morning at 9:30 from the Daly Funeral Home, Inc., 242 McClellan St., and at 10 o'clock at St. Madeleine Sophie Church (Carman Rd.) where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Calling hours Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment, North Hardyston Cemetery, Hardyston Township, NJ. Memorial contributions may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor, 1 Jeanne Jugan Ln., Latham, NY 12110.
