Please share a memory of Marjorie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Niskayuna - Marjorie H. Assini, 91, died peacefully on Wednesday, October 17, 2018, at Kingsway Nursing Home, after a brief illness.
Born in Watervliet, NY on March 27, 1927, to the late Peter and Josephine Mahar Pryor. Marjorie was the youngest of five children who all predeceased her: Francis, Peter, Jr. and Donald Pryor, and Dorothy Owens. She was also predeceased by an infant son, Donald Edward Assini and an infant granddaughter, Stephanie Mindel, as well by her beloved niece and Godchild, Mary Bronwyn Owens. Marjorie was the last survivor in her family of her generation.
Marjorie was a 1945 graduate of Watervliet High School, where she met the love of her life, Charles J. Assini. After high school, Marjorie worked as an executive secretary at the Albany Felt Company, now Albany International. She and Charles were married on January 16, 1949, and would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this January. They lived for many happy years on Birchwood Lane, Niskayuna, and in 1971 moved to Orchard Park, Niskayuna, where they met another wonderful group of friends.
Marjorie served her community as a part of many organizations. She was most proud of her volunteer work of over twenty years at Ellis Hospital, where she served for two terms as President of the Board. She frequently volunteered for the American Red Cross Bloodmobile. She also volunteered for many years and served as President of the Board of Managers at the Heritage Home for Women. She was secretary for six years for the Ladies' Golf Association at the Mohawk Golf Club. She was president of the Ladies' Auxiliary of Niskayuna Fire District 2. An active parishioner of the former Our Lady of Fatima, now Kateri Tekawitha Parish, Marjorie served as an usher, Eucharistic minister and on the grieving committee. She attended Mass for years and took great comfort in her strong Roman Catholic faith.
Marjorie was an excellent golfer, and also kept active by jogging, biking and walking. She was also a talented author, who wrote memoir as well as well as fiction. Everyone who met Marjorie was touched by her thoughtfulness, generosity, and sense of humor. She loved animals, especially her infamous cat, Mishka and her "granddogs'' . She loved the staff of the Niskayuna Co-op, where she was affectionately known as 'Mrs .A".
Marjorie and Charles traveled all over the United States and Canada, took many cruises and visited Ireland, England, Scotland, Italy, Germany, France, Luxemobourg and Switzerland, often with their great friends from the Birchwood Lane years.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Charles J. Assini of Niskayuna, her beloved daughter Jo Anne (Kenneth Bulko) of Niskayuna, her beloved son, Charles J. Assini, Jr. (Jennifer) of Niskayuna, and her adored grandchildren, Ritchie Assini of Saratoga Springs and Samuel Assini of Niskayuna, as well as a devoted brother-in -law William Assini of Latham, and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews, and cousins.
A funeral serice will be held at Kateri Tekakwitha Church on Union Street on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 10:30 A.M. Calling hours will take place from 9:00 until 10:30 at the church. Burial will be at St. Patrick's cemetery, Watervliet, NY
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Fovever Home Dog Rescue of the Capital District, 80 Frederick Ave. Albany, NY or the Schenectady Boys and Girls Club, or a charity of their choice.
