Agnes Alta Gatta (nee Abare), 93, passed away peacefully, with her loving family at her side, Wednesday June 22, 2022. Agnes was born in Schenectady the daughter of the late Juanita and John Abare and was a lifelong resident of Scotia. In June of 1946 Agnes graduated from Scotia High School where she was a majorette and cheerleader. In her senior year, Agnes met the love of her life Joseph J. Gatta, Sr. and they were married July 24, 1948. Agnes was happily married to Joe for 73 years, which was not enough for him. After graduating High School, Agnes was a secretary for General Electric and Maqua. Agnes was a great cook, enjoyed baking and reading. Agnes was the cookie chairperson for Girl Scouts. Agnes and Joe enjoyed spring vacations in North Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head, as well as fall vacations in Cape Cod with family. Agnes’ greatest joy was being a mother, a grandmother and a great-grandmother. In addition to her beloved husband, Agnes is survived by her 7 adoring children: Deborah (Michael) Martin, Becky (Tom) McAllister, Mark (Kim) Gatta, Tina (Don) Traver, JoAnn (Michael) Pommer, Joseph (Patty) Gatta, Jr. and Gregg Gatta, 26 grandchildren and 48 great-grandchildren (plus 2 more coming in July) and brother Joseph Abare. She is also survived by her in-laws Carmen Gatta, Sally Gatta, Phyllis Gatta, Robert & Marianna Gatta, MaryAnn & James Marx, and many, many nieces, nephews and cousins. Agnes was previously deceased by her brother, John R. Abare, Jr. along with her in-laws; Mary and Joseph Gatta, Clara and Samuel Coppola, Tom Gatta, Genevieve Gatta, George Gatta and Carol Abare. Agnes’ family would like to give special thanks to All-Metro Aides and family that helped provide excellent care and compassion during the last few years, especially Pamela, Bibi, Margaret, Vidya, Wellai and Jill Dunster-Wesley. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday 1:00 pm at St. Joseph’s Church, 231 2nd St., Scotia. A calling hour will precede the Mass from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm at the church. Internment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Schenectady. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers can be made in Agnes’ memory to St. Joseph’s Church, Scotia or The City Mission of Schenectady.
