Obituary of Gladys G. Dockey
Please share a memory of Gladys to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Gladys G. Dockey, 95, of Niskayuna, passed away on Thursday September 1, 2022.
Gladys was born in Northumberland County Pennsylvania to Darwin and Mary (Lenker) Dreibelbis. She was the oldest daughter of 5 children. Her family were sharecroppers which wasn’t an easy life but it built a strong foundation for a lifelong work ethic. Work was her love language. She was happiest when she was busy, and she was always busy.
Gladys married Dean D. Dockey when he returned home from the Navy and World War II, and soon after they left their families and small-town life to follow Dean’s work in pipeline construction. They moved around quite a bit before landing in this area when they had children. Gladys believed a good education would ensure a secure future so they settled in Niskayuna.
Dean worked long hours and Gladys was in charge of the homestead. From food to finances, maintenance to medical emergencies, she had it covered. She was the backbone of the family.
When her children went to school, Gladys went to work. She started in the cafeteria and worked her way up to Payroll Clerk for the Niskayuna School District. She was responsible for generating the payroll for the entire district for many years before she retired in 1992. She was a hard worker and a conscientious employee.
Gladys was dedicated to her values. She worked hard and lived modestly. Her determination, discipline and dignity live on in the inspiration and example she provided to her children.
Gladys was predeceased by her husband Dean D. Dockey and her 4 siblings.
Gladys is survived by her daughter Debra (Charlie) Story of Alplaus and her son Alan (Shelly) Dockey of Altamont and grandchildren Erika Dockey and Dean A. Dockey also of Altamont.
Gladys’ family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation for the loving care she received at Peregrine of Colonie and Ingersoll Place. The individuals who work in these communities have enormous hearts and do difficult work with dedication and compassion. Their support was monumental and will never be forgotten.
Funeral services will be private.
