Please share a memory of Gerald to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Scotia - Gerald M. Walsh, 92 years old, died peacefully at Baptist Health Nursing and Rehab on April 2424, 2023 A native of Buffalo, NY, the son of Gerald Hugh and Florence Marriott Walsh, Gerry served in the U.S. Navy from 1949-1953 on the USS Sanborn and submarine, USS Halfbeak. He also taught his fellow sailors how to swim at the Navy Swim school. He first came to live in Schenectady in 1958, where he started a family with his wife, Antonia.
He chose a career in teaching, after graduating from SUNY Oneonta and settling in Scotia, NY, spending the majority of his professional years in the Amsterdam School District. He was a Boy Scout Master, an amateur scientist, and involved dad: attending concerts, leading family camping trips, hunting rocks, and pointing to the stars. He made sure all of his kids could swim and took every opportunity to get on a sail boat. In his retirement, Gerry volunteered at the Scotia Children's Museum and traveled throughout the U.S., enjoying Elderhostels and visits with his grandchildren. He loved being a Grandpa!
He is survived by his four children: John (Ann) Walsh, Hugh (Catherine) Walsh, Kate Walsh, and David (Crystal) Walsh, 9 grandchildren (Christopher, Rachel, & Peter Hoose; Benjamin, Dennis & Bridget Walsh; Lillian & Robert Walsh; and Lee Kenneth-Walsh) and 10 great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his only sibling, Ann Walsh Lee (2022) of Buffalo.
We'd like to thank the staff of Baptist Health Care for the many years of compassionate and attentive care and The Community Hospice for their extra support these past several months.
Private services will be held at a later date.
