Obituary of Mary E. White

Mary McCarroll White, a resident of Niskayuna, passed away on August 2nd, 2023. Mary was born in Albany, New York on February 16th 1930, the daughter of the late Vincent and Rita (Gaffney) McCarroll. Mary graduated from the Academy of the Holy Names in 1947, received a bachelor's degree from the College of St. Rose in 1951 and Master credit from Oneonta State University. She taught elementary school at Vincentian Institute, (the glass school) in Albany and in the Schenectady school system. On June 21st 1952 she married Artist V. White at the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes. Sons Michael, David and Stephen were born to complete their family. After moving with her husband and sons to Illinois in 1964, Mary taught school in Mt. Prospect, Illinois until she decided to make a career change. Fascinated with the medical field, Mary completed medical courses at Harper College and was employed by LifeSource, a blood collection service. In 1994 Mary and her husband returned to Niskayuna, New York to be close to her mother, brother, sisters and their families. Mary enjoyed teaching Faith Formation at St. Helen's Roman Catholic Church and also at Our Lady of Fatima Church. She relished spending time with her loving family, liked working crossword puzzles, watching mysteries on TV, reading, writing novels and short stories for children. She also enjoyed playing cards with her senior friends at the Niskayuna Senior Center. Survivors include her son, David and daughter-in-law, Twila, of Schenectady, her grandson, Erik White, wife Claudia, great-granddaughter, Caroline Lynn, of Roanoke Texas, her granddaughter, Mary Hedges, husband Tracy and great-granddaughter, Emma Mae of San Angelo, Texas; sisters, Jeanne Black, Niskayuna, Joan Clay Sunrise, Florida, and many nephews and nieces. Mary was predeceased by: her husband of 57 years, Artist and her sons Michael and Stephen. sister Rita Byrne, brother Austin McCarroll, sister-in-law, Sarah McCarroll, brother-in-laws, Gene Clay, and John Black. A special thanks to all those at Kingsway Manor for their loving care of 'mama white' and also a huge thank you to the Ellis Hospital/Hospice staff for making mom's final days so comfortable. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Kateri Tekakwitha Roman Catholic Church /School. Calling hours will be Sunday, August 6, 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan St., Schenectady. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church, 1803 Union Street, at 9 a.m. on Monday, August 7, 2023, followed by interment in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery.
