Obituary of Stephen Fitz

Stephen Andrew Fitz Schenectady - Stephen A. Fitz, 84, passed away Sunday January 22, 2012 at Ellis Hospital. He was born August 9, 1927 in Schenectady, a son of the late Edwin and Margaret (Hendry) Fitz and was a lifelong area resident. Steve graduated from Nott Terrace High School, Class of 1946 and proudly served in the US Navy from 1944 to 1945. He began his broadcasting career with WSNY in 1948 and worked there until 1964 during which time he met the love of his life, Margaret Peggy Kerr, and they were married in May of 1949. Also, during that time he was one of the pioneers of talk radio starting the Party Line program in 1952. Steve was a play by play announcer for local high school and college football games including the Weekend Pontiacs, a semi-pro basketball team. His career also included being a TV talk show host of the Telecom on WHMT, the Contact evening talk show on WGY and 16 years as an afternoon talk show host on WQBK. After his broadcasting career that spanned over 40 years, Steve worked at Northeast Health / The Eddy in community relations while serving on the boards of the Schenectady County Library and Ellis Hospital. Steve was predeceased by his wife, Peggy in 2009. They are survived by their children, Stephen A. Fitz, Jr., his wife, Pat, Gil P. Fitz, his wife, Kim and Johanna Trahan, her husband, Tony; grandchildren, Alison, Gillian, Eddie, Emily, Alex; and great-grandsons, Owen and Noah. The funeral service will be Thursday 6 p.m. at the Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan St., Schenectady. Calling hours will precede the service from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
