Freddie Lee Anderson, 88, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 20, 2023, at St. Peter’s Rehabilitation and Nursing Home surrounded by his loving family. Freddie was born on April 25, 1935, in Warwick, Georgia, to the late Lottie Mae Dixon Anderson and Tobie Lee Anderson. In 1949 he relocated to Schenectady, NY, and was a lifelong resident. Freddie owned and operated Anderson Blacktop Paving & Sealcoat for 45 years. He formerly owned the Paige Inn and the Albany Street Laundromat. He was one of the first Black business owners in Schenectady. He always believed in treating customers honestly and politely. He was a devoted and loving family man, faithful member of Mt. Olivet Missionary Baptist Church since 1949, an avid Yankees baseball fan, and he loved western movies and his electronic card games. He became a Life Member of the Mt. Moriah Lodge No. 25 in Troy. He was a generous supporter of his church, community, and civic organizations. He was also the recipient of several awards, including the NAACP Businessman of the Year, and in 2022 he was recognized by the Schenectady NAACP Branch 2175 as part of the Black History Month Celebration. Freddie is survived by his lifelong friend and former spouse Virginia LaBad; his beloved cousins Edie Mae Dixon, Frankie Dixon, Gloria Dixon, and Dora Dean (Wayman Sr.) Lewis; children: Gregory (Jenny) Stevens, Pamela (John) Carter I, Ashby Stevens, Gina (Tyrone) Stevens, Mischelle (Robert) Fields, Felicia McAllister, and Curtis Welcome; grand-children: Jasmin (Alfred) Stevens, Mario (Tiffany) Grau, Kamille (Travis) Jobe, Monika (Theodore) Mathis, Charelle Carter (Dorian) Brooks, John (Melissa) Carter II, LaShana Blanks, Cory Anderson, Javere Anderson, Candi Anderson, Kesha Steele, Jasmine Anderson, Iesha Anderson, Imaniyeh Stevens, Jedai Stevens, Donnell Forman, Alexis Spencer-Anderson, Raymond Jabonaski, Dee-Ann Jabonaski, Caden Sidoti; daughter-in-law Lori Anderson; and several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He also helped raise cousins Johnnie, Joel and Jeanette Dixon. Freddie was predeceased by his son Guy A. Anderson, grandson Amir Stevens, and siblings Mildred Thomas, James Anderson, and Lonnie Anderson. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, December 1, 2023, at 11:00 A.M. and visitation with the family from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. at Daly Funeral Home. Interment will be in Park View Cemetery, Schenectady.
