Rotterdam- Michael E. McGrath, 51, a veteran of both the United States Army and Navy and a resident of Schenectady, NY, died at home on Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2023. He was born on April 20, 1972 to Leon and Gerri McGrath and attended Mohonasen High School before enlisting in the military. He served two tours in Afghanistan and two tours in Iraq and achieved the rank of Sergeant E6 in the US Army. Michael was awarded the following decorations for his combined military service: Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Coast Guard Commendation Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserved Medal with M Device, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, NATO Medal and Expert Infantryman Badge. He was also awarded the William A. Koenige award from the Schenectady Police Department in 1993 for his bravery in apprehending suspects while home from duty. Michael enjoyed arm wrestling and cherished his dog Mooky.
Michael is survived by his parents Leon and Gerri McGrath, brother Robert McGrath, sister Tanya (McGrath) Scime, and several nieces, nephews and grand-nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 from 5pm to 7pm at Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan St., Schenectady, NY 12304. A military burial will take place at 10am, Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at the Saratoga National Cemetery, 200 Duell Rd., Schuylerville, NY. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
