Obituary of Maria L. Caruso
Please share a memory of Maria to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Maria L. Caruso, 91, lovingly known as "Ghee" by her family, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2024.
Born and educated in Schenectady, Mary was the daughter of the late Vincenzo and Virginia Corridore. A sporty, basketball playing, 1950 graduate of Mont Pleasant High School, Mary went on to live both a fulfilling and rewarding life.
After marrying her loving husband Rudolph (Rudy) in September 1954, she went on to serve her community in a variety of different jobs and volunteer opportunities: working at Schenectady Savings and Loan Bank on State Street, and then for Dr. Cooley and Dr. Rebanal in their General Surgery practice for over 20 years, a den mother for cub scouts, made Christmas ornaments for the St. Nick's breakfast at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Church (formerly St. Helen's Church) for 30 years, volunteered at the St. Clare's Hospital Surgical Center, and was an active member in the St. Kateri Tekakwitha parish serving as an usher, greeter, counter, and eucharistic minister. In 2005 she was recognized by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany as a "Woman who has said Yes to God."
Mary will always be remembered lovingly by her family as a dedicated wife, mother, ghee, and great-ghee. She loved nothing more than spending time with her family, attending sporting events and activities for her grandchildren (with a bag of candy in tow), cheering on her beloved Union Garnet Chargers hockey team, the Knicks, Mets and the Jets, watching Steve Harvey on the Game Show Network, and enjoying a Malibu and Cranberry (her favorite drink of choice). We will miss the countless hours spent with her making crafts, her famous back scratches and pasta sauce, and the joke chain emails she used to flood our inboxes with.
She was predeceased by her husband Rudolph Caruso, parents Vincenzo and Virginia Corridore, brother Amedeo Corridore, son-in-law Ralph DiVietro, and special friend Robert Reisinger.
She is survived by her son Michael (Carol) Caruso, daughter Lisa DiVietro, grandchildren Christopher (Jenna) Caruso, Angela (Andrew) Mink, Matthew DiVietro, Marisa DiVietro, great grandchildren Caden and Calleigh Caruso, Baby Mink, several nieces and nephews, and her caretaker Karen Verruto.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Kateri Tekakwitha (1803 Union Street, Niskayuna, NY) Friday, February 16th at 9:00 am. Interment will follow at St. Anthony's Cemetery (27 Glenridge Road, Glenville, NY). Calling hours will be Thursday, February 15th, 4:00 pm-7:00 pm at Daly Funeral Home (242 McClellan Street, Schenectady, NY 12304).
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to Jack's Place, 17 Rosa Road, Schenectady, NY 12308, or the Garnet Blades of Union College Hockey, 807 Union Street, Schenectady, NY 12308.
