Dorothy Avis (Scott) Van Luik, 97, went home peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, July 27. She was residing at Kingsway Arms Nursing Center in Schenectady, New York.
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Dorothy was the oldest child of James C. Scott and Avis (Stringfellow) Scott. She graduated from Webster Groves High School and Washington University in St. Louis. After World War II, she married Frank W. Van Luik Jr.. They moved to Schenectady, New York, and had 3 children, Marjorie Skinner, Richard Van Luik and Robert Van Luik.
As a young adult, Dorothy developed a strong faith. Her passion was to study the Bible and teach what she learned to others. She was active in church and taught youth as well as adults in Sunday School and home Bible studies. As a teenager, she and her sister, Peggy Ann, spent many hours outdoors and she continued her love of camping with her children. Many weekends were spent at Lake George and Sacandaga boating, swimming, and picnicking. She was an excellent seamstress and made many clothes for herself and her daughter. Always very organized, she enjoyed creating custom purses with lots of inner pockets.
Thirteen years ago, she and Frank moved to an independent apartment at Kingsway. They were married for 70 years before Frank passed away in 2019. Dorothy spent much of her time keeping in touch with her children and grandchildren through cards, email, and long letters. As age began to take its toll, she maintained a positive attitude and was known for her beautiful smile.
Dorothy will be greatly missed by her three children, their spouses, her 9 grandchildren, and her 21 great grandchildren. She leaves a legacy of faith.
