Obituary of Robert T. O'Brien
Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Robert Thomas O'Brien of Glenville, passed away October 31, 2024 at New York-Presbyterian Columbia University Irving Medical Center while awaiting a liver transplant.
Affectionately known as Bob by his family, he was born January 17, 1976, in Troy, New York and attended various schools in and around Schenectady, graduating from Schenectady High School in 1994. After high school, Robert went on to receive a Bachelor's degree from the State University of New York University at Buffalo. While at UB, he was active in residential life and went to work in student affairs upon graduation.
After a career in academia, Robert went on to pursue his true passion for writing and exploring. He was a talented writer and poet and lived in many states including Arizona, Florida, Louisiana, Missouri, and North Carolina before returning to New York to care for his father, upon the passing of his mother.
After returning home, Robert reconnected with his dearest friend of 20 years, Laura Stetson of Albany. Together they enjoyed exploring local brunch spots and pizzerias. He also loved watching, reading and writing about professional and college sports and was a Mets fan.
Robert was predeceased by his mother Renate S. O'Brien (Priess), as well as his late aunt and uncle, Angelika and Charles "Pops" Fletcher of Schenectady.
He is survived by his father Arthur T. O'Brien, formerly of Watervliet, sister Christine O'Brien of Milton, niece Janette Deyoe and great-nephew Eric.
Robert also leaves behind his uncle Michael and aunt Donna Priess of Guilderland and cousins Michele Reale (Paul) of Rotterdam Junction, Steven Priess (Janice) of Latham, Ryder Priess of Berlin, Germany and Charles Fletcher Jr. of Schenectady.
The family will receive condolences on Saturday, November 9 from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm at Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan St., Schenectady with services following at the funeral home. Interment will be at Memory Gardens at a later date.
While Robert ultimately was unable to receive a liver transplant, he was an organ donor and in his death was able to give the gift of life to others in need. For more information on organ donation, please visit https://donatelife.ny.gov
