Scotia - Frederick "Chickie" Sarsfieldj Chicken, 82, passed away Friday November 29, 2024.
Fred was born April 16, 1942, to the late Frederick and Josephine (Dopjera) Chicken and was a lifelong Scotia resident, having lived with his sister Nancy and brother-in-law Arthur Merchant for over 30 years. Fred was the ultimate athletic fan, never missing a local game of any kind. He worked on the Scotia-Glenville Buildings and Grounds Crew for 47 years, making a myriad of friends along the way. Through his quiet and unassuming way, Fred taught many, the virtues of compassion, acceptance and human value. He was loved by all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother-in-law Arthur and niece Jennifer Kristin. He is survived by his sister Nancy Merchant, nephew, Corey (Michelle) Merchant, nephew Brian Kristin, great-nephews Brayden and Dylan Merchant and great-nieces Hannah and Hailey Kristin and many cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, 10:30 am, at St. Joseph's Church, 231 2nd St., Scotia, NY. A calling hour will precede the mass, at the church from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. Interment to follow the mass; in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions, in his name, may be made to Schenectady ARC, 214 State St., Schenectady, NY 12305 or St. Joseph's Church, 231 2nd St., Scotia, NY 12302.
