My best friend Brian was a member of the Jewish community center in Schenectady up near Craig elementary school. I think I was about 7 when i joined so I could swim on swim team with him. Barry was our basketball coach there too. I was a little kid and he was so tall. He taught us all sorts of rudiments of the game. What a nice guy to give his time for us. So sorry to hear of his passing.

Barry Kramer was an icon during his playing days at his alma mater (and mine) NYU. Together with his teamates Happy Hairston and Satch Sanders, his play achieved national prominence for the school. He was among the great Jewish athletes in history, in the mold of Hank Greenberg and Sandy Koufax.
As a schoolmate of his, I remember Barry with affection, am saddened by his passing, and pray for God to watch over him in heaven.

Q: How did you meet Barry?
A: Pat, Bryan, Lysa and Colin.
I first met Barry in 2008 after I contacted Pat by phone, I was doing genealogy research, and I discovered that Pat was my cousin, we shared the Morrison name. That same year along with my uncle we visited Pat and Barry at their house. That visit showed me the character of both Pat and Barry. They were very accepting, generous with their time and very caring. Pat shared family history and Barry talked about his basketball days, from playing Duke in the 1963 NCAA semi-final to his NBA days and his great friendship with Wilt Chamberlain. I stayed in touch since then and I am so very, very fortunate to have just visited Barry and Pat in November of 2024. I will always remember our first meeting and our last, the years flew by, but Barry remained the same, a great father, grandfather and husband to Pat. Goodbye Barry. Todd Bissonette.

Any basketball player worth his salt from the Capital District knew of Barry Kramer, particularly if you played your high school basketball for one of the three strong city schools of that era- Linton, Mt. Pleasant and where my brother Rick and I played- Bishop Gibbons. Playing for the mythical city championship back then was a big deal. Watching Kramer, Pat Riley, Gary Pryzblo, Larry Harris and Don Blaha as well as Dick Grubar, Bob Moskal, Carl Davenport and Jim Tedesco play at Gibbons sold us on going to Gibbons to be part of that. I only played once against Barry in a pickup game at the old YMCA on State Street and was amazed at how strong he was and how he could jump. I didn't know him personally but knew what a great player and person he was. He'll never know how many young kids he inspired to be like him. Rest in Peace, Barry.
