Obituary of John C. Greer

John Cornelius Greer, 69, passed away on January 14, 2025, in Clifton Park, NY after a lengthy illness. Born on May 24,1955 in Schenectady, NY, he was the son of the late William F. Greer and Mary G. Greer. John grew up in Schenectady, graduating from Linton High School in 1973. He then earned his bachelor's degree from UAlbany in 1977. For most of his career, John worked as a boilermaker for Local 5/197 in West Milton, NY, retiring in 2013. John was a humble yet talented musician, capable of playing any stringed instrument. He felt most comfortable with an acoustic guitar, playing since seven years old, but he also loved picking the banjo. John's love for music was evident in every aspect of his life, a passion he passed down to his children. He and Sue would travel around the northeast for bluegrass festivals and enjoyed playing with the Adirondack Bluegrass League at the Parting Glass in Saratoga Springs. John enjoyed watching sports, especially professional tennis matches and NFL games - Go Bills! In his youth he was an avid tennis player and enjoyed other outdoor activities like softball, canoeing and cross-country skiing. His proudest achievement was being a loving and compassionate father and grandfather. He loved creating new memories with family and friends. John is survived by his wife, Susan Oliva, of Glenville, NY; siblings, Thomas Greer, William Greer Jr. (Rose), and Mary Jane Greer; children, Sharon Braddock, David Greer (Julia), and Maribeth Pagerie (Zebadiah); grandchildren, Odin Pagerie and Abigail Greer; many nieces and nephews; and his first wife, Peggy Greer. Calling hours for John will be held on Sunday, January 19, 2025, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan St., Schenectady with a funeral service to immediately follow.
