Dale J. Hurd, Sr., 75, of Clyde Avenue, passed away Thursday morning, December 31, 2009, at his home. Dale was born in Elmira, NY, on August 7, 1934, a son of the late Rex and Fanny Cornell Hurd. He was educated in Elmira Heights and was a graduate of Thomas A. Edison High School, class of 1952. While in high school, Dale was captain of the football team. At the age of 17, he began working for American Bridge (a division of U.S. Steel) as a draftsman. In 1955, Dale entered the United States Army where he served faithfully until 1957. After serving in the military he returned to work at American Bridge. Dale continued his employment as a draftsman until 1967, when he and his family relocated to Wynantskill. From 1967 to 1976, he was employed by Westside Structural in Watervliet as an estimator. He later moved to Rotterdam in 1986, where he completed his career as a structural engineer and senior estimator for Schenectady Steel. Dale retired on January 1, 1999. For many years while living in Elmira, he volunteered as a fireman. While his children were growing up, Dale acted as an assistant Boy Scout leader and little league manager in Wynantskill. During the 1970s, he served as deacon to the First Reformed Church of Wynantskill. An avid golfer, Dale participated in the Communications Golf League. In addition to his parents, Dale was predeceased by two siblings, Joyce Jurusik and Richard Hurd. Survivors include his dearly beloved and cherished wife, Kay Roby Hurd, whom he married June 17, 1961 in Elmira Heights; loving and devoted children, Stacy Wolfsberg and her husband, Mark of Delmar, Dale Hurd, Jr. and his wife, Kathy of Saratoga Springs, and Timothy Hurd and his wife, Emily of Stow, MA; adored grandchildren, Jacob, Eric and Ethan Wolfsberg, all of Delmar, Brooke and Tyler Hurd, both of Saratoga Springs and Abigail, Olivia and Jack Hurd, all of Stow, MA; loving siblings, Crystal Bump of Horseheads, NY, Virginia Hurley of Elmira, Donald Hurd and his wife, Sylvia of Beaver Dams, NY, Duane Hurd and his wife, Jackie of Clifton Park, and Lois Kwasnik and her husband, Michael of Manlius, NY; also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. Relatives and friends are invited to join the family for calling hours, Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan Street, Schenectady. Funeral service Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. from the Daly Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. John Califano officiating. Interment will follow in Memory's Garden, Colonie.
