Robert John Barrett, Sr. of Schenectady, died after a short illness at Ellis Hospital December 30, 2009. Bob was born in Niskayuna on April 29, 1942 and was the son of the late Violet and Frank Barrett. He attended Peekskill Military Academy in Peekskill, NY from 1958 to 1961 and was a member of the track and soccer teams. In 1961 Bob went through basic training and joined the Air National Guard, where he was a fire fighter until 1967. While in the Air National Guard, Bob worked in his family's business, Barrett Electric Service, with his father. It was located on Erie Blvd. and Henry St. After 87 years in business, he sold the company to pursue other projects. Our dad loved the water and the mountains and he was an avid water skier and downhill skier. Later in life he took up woodworking and made us all excellent pieces of furniture out of exotic hard woods with his extensive woodworking power tools. He is survived by his daughter, Stacy Barrett; his grandson, Nicholas Marrello; his son, Robert Barrett, Jr. and Edna Swart. Everyone who knew him greatly admired his easy, loving and gentle manner, especially his best friends in this world, Elaine, Robyn, Gabrielle, Mickey, Eddy, Louie, Joe, Jim and Jimmy. Funeral service will be Monday 12 o'clock (noon) at the Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan St. An hour of visitation will precede the service on Monday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park, Colonie. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice, 1411 Union St., Schenectady.
