Filipos (Phillip) Menagias, age 88, of Schenectady, passed away peacefully, Monday, May 23, 2011, his loving family by his side. Phillip was born on the island of Cephalonia, Greece in 1922. In 1967 he immigrated to the United States with his wife and four children on the ocean liner, Queen Frederica. Upon arrival, he and his family began working at the new Broadway Lunch, then owned by his brother, Demetrios Menagias. His family then opened the Blue Ribbon Restaurant in 1977 where he was actively involved until recently. He was very proud of his children's and grandchildren's successes. Phillip came from an island that endured years of hardship during World War II and was decimated by an earthquake in 1953. From 1956 until 1967 he traveled the world as a merchant marine for a Greek shipping company. Phillip was an honest, hard working, self-driven person who was full of life. His strong belief in his religion and morals galvanized his family and community. Blue Ribbon and Phillip will always be synonymous with each other, he will be greatly missed. He is survived by his beloved wife, Adamantia; his four children, Angelo (Alexandra) Menagias, Jerry (Angela) Menagias, Vicky (Steven) Arrington, Katerina Menagias; and brother, Demetrios (Anna) Menagias. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, several cousins, a niece and nephew. The Trisagion service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan Street, Schenectady, NY 12304. Calling hours will also be held Wednesday from 3:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Funeral service and burial is private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial contribution to St. George's Greek Orthodox Church, 107 Clinton Street, Schenectady, NY 12305.
