Obituary of Olev Paul

Nisdayuna - The family of Olev Paul mourns the loss of their beloved father and grandfather who passed away peacefully at home in Niskayuna, NY on November 24, 2011. Born in Tartu, Estonia, on October 16, 1927, he fled Estonia just before the Iron Curtain fell and eventually reached safety of an UNRRA Displaced Persons Camp in Munich, Germany. He joined the U.S. Army's Labor Service Company 8090 in Frankfurt as a jeep driver before finally arriving in the United States on December 3, 1949. Olev served honorably in the Korean War in 1951 with the 25th Infantry. Upon his return to the United States, Olev graduated with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Brooklyn Polytechnic University in 1955. He married Malle Saluste, a fellow refugee, in 1957. In the 1960's, Mr. Paul worked at General Electric Co. in Schenectady and the Watervliet Arsenal. He earned a masters degree in Metallurgical Engineering from RPI in 1959. He continued to pursue his engineering career at the Naval Shipyards in Charleston, SC, and Grumman Aerospace Corporation, Long Island, NY, where he ultimately worked on the Apollo Mission's Lunar Module project and F-14 Jet Fighter program. Olev retired from Grumman Corp, in 1988 after more than 20 years of service. An avid traveler and history buff, Mr. Paul spent his retirement years in the company of his wife of 51 years, reading and traveling, His spare time was spent enjoying the company of her family and wide group of longtime friends. Olev Paul is survived by his son, Sven; his daughter-in-law, Hillevi; his granddaughter, Maarja; niece, Michelle Michlin; and nephew, Erik Saluste. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan St., Schenectady. A calling hour will predede the service from noon to 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
