Josephine A. Schermerhorn, 91, passed away Tuesday, February 22, 2011, peacefully, at her daughter's home, surrounded by her family. Born in Schenectady, Josephine was a lifelong area resident. She was a graduate of Draper High and the Spencer School of Business. She worked as a secretary for the General Electric Company, New York State Dept. of Transportation, then for the New York State Dept. of Tax and Finance where she retired. Josephine was a volunteer at Our Lady of Mercy Center, The Avenue and Dutch Manor Nursing Homes; she always visited those in need of support bringing a flower, thus getting the nickname the "flower angel." She was a woman of strong faith, attending Mass at many churches in the Schenectady area, who loved being with her family, especially her grandchildren. Wife of the late Thomas Schermerhorn Sr., who passed away in 1980. Survivors include three children, Thomas Schermerhorn Jr. and his wife, Christine of Oneonta, Monica Shelmandine and her husband, Paul, Patrick Schermerhorn and his wife, Anita, both of Niskayuna; two grandchildren, Matthew Cole and Melissa Day and her husband, Jesse; and a great-granddaughter, Lillianna Day. She is predeceased by a brother, Michael Hasso. A memorial service will be held Friday morning at 11:30 at St. Madeleine Sophie Church. An hour of visitation will precede the service Friday morning from 9:45 to 10:45 at the Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan St. Interment, Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice, 1411 Union St., Schenectady, NY 12308 or the American Cancer Society .
