Schenectady- Virgil Carpenter Shear Jr.(Dinny) passed away surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday June 10, 2009. Born in Schenectady on December 2, 1928. He was the son of the late Virgil C. and Loretta K. (Kittel) Shear. In his youth, he was a avid speed skater with the Capital District Skating club, winning numerous awards. He graduated Nott Terrace High School in 1947 and was a member of the New York National Guard in 1949. Dinny worked an auto mechanic at various service stations in the Schenectady area. As a machinist at General Electric Main plant in the Small AC Motors division and at the GE Campbell Ave Rocket plant, in support of the USA V2 rocket program. He started his sales career as a Car Salesman with Webster Motors and then continued with Allstate Insurance as an Agent. He returned to Car Sales with Graham Ford, Helfrich Ford, Metro Ford, all located in Schenectady, and Salisbury Chevrolet, in Glenville. He won numerous sales awards with these dealerships, retiring in 1990. Dinny made many lifelong friends throughout his professional career. He is also predeceased by his brother and sister, Charles Shear, Elaine (Shear) Butler. He is survived by his devoted wife of 59 years, Agnes Mary (Morrone) Shear and children; David (Holly) Shear, Sue Shear, Kenneth (Kelly) Shear, Sandra (Jeffery) Bartlett and Amy (Michael) Calderone. He has twelve grandchildren; Felicia, Kalla, Dana, Dominic, Mikaela, Antonio, Alexander, Maxwell, Kelsey, Kiley, Katey, Kenny and three great grandchildren; Andrew, Sebastian, Giana He enjoyed spending time on the beach at his summer home on Lake George, boating, listening and dancing to music of the Jazz and Big Band genres, travel, practical jokes, bowling, playing with his grandkids. Funeral Service Tuesday morning 8:45 from the Daly Funeral Home 242 McClellan Street, Schenectady and 9:30 at St. John the Evangelist Church where a The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Calling hours Monday evening 5 to 8 at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to Community Hospice of Schenectady 1411 Union Street Schenectady, NY 12308, North Queensbury Rescue Squad, PO Box 272, Cleverdale, NY 12820, or St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 816 Union St., Schenectady, NY 12308. Dinny's family wishes to express their gratitude to Ellis Hospital C-6 staff for their quality of care provided to their husband, father and family at during this difficult time.
