George Sokol Obituary

George J. Sokol, 86, of Glenridge Rd., died Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at Glendale Nursing Home, after a long illness. George was born in Schenectady and was a graduate of Mont Pleasant High School. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran earning the rank of staff sergeant. He was a metallurgist with the Knolls Atomic Power Lab for many years, retiring several years ago. George was a member of Sokol Hall, Clifton Park Elks, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church. He loved spending time at his camp on the Great Sacandaga, fishing, and hunting. He is survived by his wife, Helen Bogdon Sokol, they married in 1953. George is also survived by five children, Marcie (Karl) Maurer of Burnt Hills, Rudi (Joan) Sokol of Ocala, FL, Karen Ewart (Mark Buchheister) of Ft. Collins, CO, Christopher (Kathy) Sokol of Vallejo, CA, and Mark (Brenda) Sokol of Scotia; eight grandchildren, Rachael Maurer, Rudi Sokol, Jr., Amber Sokol, Michelle and Christopher Ewart, Melissa, Joseph and Lee Sokol; his sister-in-law, Eva Sokol, and a nephew, John Sokol. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert Sokol. Funeral service, Friday morning, 10 a.m. at the Daly Funeral Home, Inc., 242 McClellan St., Schenectady. Calling hours, Thursday evening, 6 to 8 at the funeral home. Interment will be in St. Cyril's Cemetery, Rotterdam. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union St., Schenectady, the Animal Protective Foundation, 53 Maple Ave., Scotia, NY 12302 or Immaculate Conception Church, 400 Saratoga Rd., Scotia, NY 12302.
