Obituary of Martha Wallander

Schenectady Martha Lee Wallender, 89, born September 9, 1920 to Lorenzo Todd and Helen Lee Getty in Spring Lake, New Jersey, passed away on Monday, May 24, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Kenneth C. Wallender, their son David, and her sister Suzanne Getty Dyckman of Princeton, N.J. She is survived by her two sons, Mike of Niskayuna, NY, and his children Kristina and Michael; her son Steve of Houston, TX and his wife Candice and their children Alex and Katherine, as well as her nieces Jennifer Dyckman Aldrich and Katharine Dyckman Benziger and her nephew Francis H. Dyckman, III. Marty graduated from Emma Willard School and then Vassar College in 1941 and received a Masters of Library Science from SUNY-Albany in 1965. She served as a school librarian at Glendaal Elementary School until 1978. Upon retirement she managed the Faith Bookshop of the First Reformed Church Schenectady, which she help create years earlier, for an additional 15 years. Marty served on the Boards of the Friends of the Schenectady County Public Library and the Mohawk Valley Library System, and as a volunteer with INFOLINE and many other educational and civic organizations throughout her lifetime. A memorial service will be held at the First Reformed Church Schenectady, 8 N. Church Street, on Saturday, June 19, 2010 at 11am. In honor of Marty's passion for books and reading, donations may be made in her memory to the Friends of the Schenectady County Public Library, 99 Clinton St., Schenectady, NY 12305.
