Obituary of John Miller

Schenectady - John Miller, 90, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 14, 2013 with his family at his side at Kingsway Manor. John was born in Zutphen, Holland the son of the late James and Caroline Miller. He immigrated to the United States with his mother when he was six months of age having passed through Ellis Island to join his father. They settled in Schenectady and John has been a resident since. He graduated from Mont Pleasant High School and then proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. John graduated from Ithaca College where he was the captain of the 1948 soccer team and a member of the 1948 undefeated track team. He was a physical education teacher at Schalmont High School for 25 years retiring in 1991 and was also a member of the Schenectady Football Club. He was predeceased by his wife, Madeline (Egan) Miller and his brother, James Miller. John is survived by his sister, Nancy Pallescki; daughters, Rhonda (Richard) Sheehan and Bonnie (Stanley) Purdy; grandchildren, William (Lorien) Sheehan, Nicole (Matthew) Redick, Jacqueline Sheehan and Brandon (Nicole) Purdy; great-grandchildren, Branden, Anthony, Adriana Lyn and Mason; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held Saturday 11 a.m. at Daly Funeral Home, 242 McClellan St., Schenectady. Calling hours will be Friday 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at Schenectady Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in John's name for a scholarship for a senior who will be pursuing teaching.
