Scotia - Bertha A. Berman of Scotia, died on May 13, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, NY. She was 81. A native of Jersey City, NJ, Mrs. Berman moved from suburban Philadelphia to Niskayuna in 1970. While her children were in high school and college, she returned to school herself, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Services from Empire State College, SUNY in 1980 and the M.S.W. degree from Wurzweiler School of Social Work, Yeshiva University in 1983. She worked for many years and in several capacities at the Schenectady Job Training Agency and was active in a number of local professional and community organizations, most notably the Schenectady Chapter of Business and Professional Women's Club, Inc., of which she served as Director from 1985 to 1995. She was also an enthusiastic volunteer at Proctor's Theater and at SPAC. Mrs. Berman was a member of Congregation Beth Israel in Schenectady and most recently of Congregation Beth Shalom in Clifton Park. Mrs. Berman is predeceased by her former husband, the late Ira M. ("Marty") Berman; she is survived by her brother, Lawrence Tornow of West Milford, NJ and her three children, Murray, of Terrytown, NY, Steven, of Bala Cynwyd, PA and Sheila, of Brooklyn, NY. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Mrs. Berman's name to the Scholarship Fund of the Schenectady Business & Professional Women's Club, Inc. A memorial service will be held for Bertha on Sunday, June 2 at 2:00 p.m. at Congregation Beth Shalom, 688 Clifton Park Center Road, Clifton Park, NY.
